2017 Save The Elms Program (STEP) Wrap-Up

On a cool, sunny morning in late September, members of our team of volunteer Citizen Scientists, SacTree’s staff, and the City of Sacramento’s staff gathered for delicious brunch under the oaks and elms in Land Park to celebrate another successful year of our Save The Elms Program (STEP). It had been exactly a year since we last met for the purpose of discussing the overall impact of our team’s efforts to monitor Sacramento’s public American and English elms for the pervasive Dutch elm disease (DED), a fungal disease with no known cure which has ravaged our city’s elms since the 1990’s. City Council Votes to Support Trees while Saving Water

On Tuesday evening, the Sacramento City Council voted to implement a plan to encourage residents to conserve water regardless of yearly rainfall. The ordinance makes sense considering that droughts are a frequent occurrence in the region.

Urban Wood Rescue Program Update

In July of 2015, Sac Tree was awarded a grant from Cal Fire’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) to create an Urban Wood Rescue Program. Since then we’ve worked to create a site plan for our sawmill yard and we are going through the City’s permitting process. After we’ve gained the necessary approvals, construction will begin and we’ll be able to kickoff our business plan as we look forward to giving the wood from urban trees a second life.
